Texture screening is what I call it. I'm always on the lookout for something that I think will make an interesting design. Using a variety of objects such as corrugated cardboard, leaves, fabrics, crumpled newsprint, handmade stencils, you name it, to produce different textures on fabric or paper is what's so exciting and fun about this medium. Layering the dyes, discharging them, using wax, incorporating gold leaf and textile paints, stamping and adding embellishments such as stitching, wire, tile, and beads are some of the ways to make the pieces more interesting. I count on those happy accidents and I am always thrilled when I lift the screen!
Presently my main focus is teaching myself bookbinding and designing books and boxes, using my screened papers and fabric. I enjoy being given a color scheme and ideas by a customer and then creating something unique and personalized. Any item on the website can be replicated to a certain extent, but each piece is one-of-a-kind so variations will occur. Commissions are always welcome.
I've been living in Phuket, Thailand for many years with my husband and son, returning each summer to our homestead in northern California. Periodically I teach at the British International School (BIS) here in Phuket and hold ongoing workshops out of my home studio, and also in northern California in the summer. My work has been exhibited in Phuket and California.
"I've been following and collecting Cindy's work for decades now. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. She's a genius! (And a lot of fun too.)"
